2. Description
The Unit of Medical Statistics and Cancer Epidemiology (led by Prof. Corrado Magnani) has been involved for almost two decades in research on the causes of cancer (in particular childhood cancer, adult lymphoma, occupational cancer, Gene-Environment Interaction Studies) and in clinical studies (in particular using the Kidney Transplant Registry of the Novara Hospital). The Unit is associated to the Novara Hospital, the teaching hospital of the University of Eastern Piedmont. More recently the Unit has started to conduct pharmacoepidemiological research in collaboration with Prof. Francesco Barone-Adesi at the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences. Members of the Unit are currently involved in studies using the administrative databases of the Piedmont region (4 million inhabitants). In particular, they are currently studying the risk of diabetes associated with antidepressants use, the patterns of utilization of pain-killers and the frequency of drug-drug interactions in the elderly.
