Institution description
BIPS is one of the oldest epidemiological institutes in Germany. It was founded in 1981 under the name of "Bremen Institute for Prevention Research and Social Medicine" as a research institute of the Society for the Promotion of Scientific Research in the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen (Verein zur Foerderung der wissenschaftlichen Forschung in der Freien Hansestadt Bremen e.V.). As of January 1, 2013, the institute is a full member of the Leibniz Association and operates under the new name Leibniz Institute for Prevention Research and Epidemiology - BIPS. BIPS develops effective strategies for the prevention of chronic, non-communicable diseases. Supporting a healthy life-course early on is the primary goal. The research focus is therefore on factors beyond individual diseases, such as lifestyle and environment, biological and social factors, as well as early detection and drug safety. BIPS' research spectrum covers methodological development, the identification of the causes of diseases, and intervention and implementation research. BIPS also offers information to politicians and the general population and provide academic qualification to young scientists. BIPS thus covers the entire cycle of epidemiological research.
